When to go to Zanzibar

June to October: the classic choice This is the long dry season and it's the safest bet for a beach holiday. Clear skies, calm seas, warm days without the heaviest humidity, and reliable conditions for snorkelling and diving. It also lines up neatly with peak safari season on the mainland, so it's the natural window for anyone combining a few days on the Serengeti with time on the sand afterwards. Expect the island to be busy and prices to reflect that.

December to February: hot, dry and a little quieter After the short rains clear in November, Zanzibar settles into another dry, sunny stretch. Temperatures climb higher than the June to October window and humidity builds, but the skies stay largely clear. February in particular is known for excellent diving conditions around the southern coast. This period suits travellers who want good weather without the full crowds of high season, and it's a popular choice for a festive season escape.

March to May: the long rains This is the quiet season, and for good reason. April especially brings heavy, persistent rain that can knock out full days of beach time, and some smaller lodges close for maintenance. That said, it's also the cheapest and most peaceful time to visit if you don't mind grey skies and the occasional washed out afternoon. The island turns lush and green, which has its own appeal for photographers.

November: the short rains Don't let the word rain put you off this one. The short rains are brief, usually a burst in the morning or evening followed by sunshine, and they bring welcome relief from the heat. It's a genuinely good time to visit if you want lower prices and fewer people without the risk that comes with the long rains.

Our take If you're combining Zanzibar with a safari, June to October or December to February are your best windows for reliable weather on both ends of the trip. If beach time is the whole point and you're happy to trade a bit of certainty for a quieter island and better rates, November is worth a serious look.
